Step by step breakdown of making the poster
I started off with my favourite one of the Alley images. It shows the right amount of light for the time of day and has the correct atmosphere. It is also from the same sort of area that the film is set to be in.
I added the image that I thought would work best in the poster. This image is the one I think would work best due to it looking mysterious yet at the same time shows the type of character that is the main character in the film.
Next, (after a little bit of tinkering) I decided to add a blur to the background alongside my teacher's recommendation. I originally did the complicated route of making opake copies of the background and layering them (after moving them slightly). This was complicated because I could have used Gaussian Blur to make the simple (and better looking) blur that was more effective than my previous attempt.
The next thing I did was add the title text. The reason that the Chinese text is there is because that is the spoken language in which the film is set. It reads Hold Up so tailors to that side of the audience. It also adds a tiny amount of drama.
Next, I accidentally changed the background to be this colour. I don't think that it works with the genre of the poster but it does look good. If this film was targeted to either a younger audience or as more of an action - comedy then it might work but it doesn't in this. I also added my credit block into the image and then moved my model's picture a little.
After fixing the background so that it was the same as before I went around the image of my model and made it look professional by (non-destructively) removing the white outline that was around my model.
I chose another image that I thought might work well with the poster and did the same editing that I had to the old image. It doesn't look as good but I've hidden it in case I want to use it later. The following image is what it looked like:
I redid the burning and other editing to the model image and this is what the result was:
The next thing I decided to do (with the recommendation from a classmate) was to change the colour of the text. We rasterized the text and selected it all. We cut it and pasted it into the background. We cut the shape that was preselected (from the text) and deleted that from the background. We then made a new layer and inserted our desired colouring gradient. We cut the original text layer and then had our new text. Here is the result:
We changed the angle and range of the colours in the gradient. We changed them because we found a way to make the colours match with the ones used in the posters including orange and blue as they are the most common colours (other than black). Here is the result:
Next, I added a line of text to act as a slight tease as to the story and entice people to look towards the film. Here is the change.
This is my final Poster
Evaluation
I feel like this poster suits the genre and has the desired effect. The poster could have had movie ratings and could have had a better tone for the skin but overall I feel the poster is good. If I were to be really picky, I would state that the credit block should be central (the last line hangs to the left when it should be in the middle) and I would also say that the additional font I used (the basic looking one) could have had something either fancy or different about it. Then it wouldn't be a basic looking font which is what it looks like currently.
